Good News from Iraq: 8 Aug 2008

From MNF-I, SoI leads MND-N Soldiers to large cache west of Samarra.

SAMARRA, Iraq – A Sons of Iraq group led Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment to a large weapons cache in the Jazeera Desert, west of Samarra Aug. 6.

The cache consisted of more than 110 land mines, 90 57 mm warheads, 17 80 mm mortar rounds, 10 hand grenades, 10 80 mm high-explosive grenades and numerous artillery rounds and rockets.

Also found in the cache were more than 900 pounds of potassium nitrate, 100 pounds of propellant and four propane tanks, which are commonly used in producing homemade explosives used in improvised and vehicle-borne explosive devices.

“The tips from local citizens and Sons of Iraq groups in the desert areas around Samarra have resulted in thousands of pounds of explosives taken from the enemy over past several months,” said Lt. Col. John King, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division deputy commander. “Finding this weapons cache obstructs the enemy’s ability to attack innocent civilians inside the population centers in the Salah ad Din province.”
